Into The Moon’s Glow

Inviting people to join in yearly tradition

Cropped image of a woman with a rabbit in her backpack attending a Mid Autumn Festival

The mid Autumn Festival is an ancient festival celebrated by millions of people. In it family unity is celebrated.

While already wide-spread, the festival can be shared with even more people.

How do we get them interested and let them know that they are welcome too?

The Approach

Use the power of art!

Joking aside, I am going to make a poster to inform viewers of the festival. This poster will feature illustration and typography with the goal of sharing what can be seen and felt at a Mid Autumn Festival. (A big inspiration for the project are specifically movie posters from China.)

To do the best justice for this event, I made sure to research the history, aesthetics, and culture of the festival to craft the best illustration possible, as well as refer to the knowledge of people who regularly celebrate the festival.

During initial research I became inspired by how lights glow at night. That became an inspiration for the colour theme and event branding.

Methods used

Illustration with pencil scans painted in Photoshop, and Typography refined in Illustrator.

I illustrated a lush image to put users into the scene. Other inclusions include the mooncake that symbolizes the moon and family unity, and Chang’E with her rabbit companion. Other details like the moon mooncake and leaves blowing in the wind were also added

Stylistically, a handwritten typeface was chosen to harmonize with the mood of the event and aesthetics of the illustration.
